Anytime
of the year is a good time to visit the Grand Canyon. Each season has
its own special rewards to offer. The temperatures and precipitation amounts
are very similar to the Flagstaff area:
Spring weather can bring wind,
sun , snow or rain. Be prepared for sudden changes in temperature.
Summers on the south rim are warm and relatively mild, but summers
in the inner canyon are brutally hot with temperatures well over 100
degrees F (43 C). June is hot and dry, whereas July and August are
the wettest months of the year, with frequent and sometimes severe
thunder storms.
If you are planning on doing any
hiking in the summer months be prepared for extreme temperatures. Fall
weather is beautiful, yet unpredictable at times. It is usually sunny and
mild, but again, be prepared for sudden changes in temperatures.
Winter comes to the south rim by
early December and you can expect snow anytime through March. Occasionally
the roads close due to the weather but most often the snow melts quickly.
Seeing the Canyon with snow on the rim is an experience that only a small
percentage of the total visitors get to enjoy, a real treat!
The
best way to prepare for Arizona weather is to dress in layers.
